Open Studios Notts events have begun with the opening of our exhibitions at Retford, Arnold & Beeston Libraries on 27 April (continuing to 5 June). Coming up are the first weekend of actual open studios, with 7 artists opening their studios (see below for details), the Rufford Art Society (venue 68) holding an event at the Nottingham Society of Artists gallery in Nottingham from 1-6 May and an exhibition of Southwell & Upton artists work at Beloved@theBarn (33) in Southwell that runs from 2-29 May. You can also visit Gallery 6 (24) in Newark which has work by Nottinghamshire artists and from further afield.
The 7 artists opening their studios are: potter Ann Robbins plus painters Jean Rush & Penny Cawley forming a trail of Scrooby Artists (venues 2-4) in the north of the County; painter Maxwell Neale (21) in Collingham, artist Suzanne Jones (22) at Carriages Cafe in Newark (a short walk from Gallery 6), blacksmith David Gill (37) operating the forge at Papplewick Pumping Station, and ceramicist Kit Anderson (54) plus painter & textile artist Sasha Niamat (63) in Nottingham.
Our three OSNotts exhibitions are in the final stages of being put up at Retford, Arnold and Beeston Libraries and will be open to the public from tomorrow (27 April). Each will show studio images, taken in February and March this year by photographer Neil Pledger (of ART DK), of some of the artists participating in this year’s open studio events.
Each exhibition will also have information about all the events that are taking place around Nottinghamshire and Nottingham through May and early June – and you can pick up copies of our brochure to guide you round them. The exhibitions are curated by Inspire Arts, for whose support we are extremely grateful.
On Monday 16 April, Notts TV’s “Ey Up Notts” included our very own Tina Bettison, of Beloved@TheBarn in Southwell, telling viewers all about the upcoming Open Studios Notts events. You can see the podcast by clicking on the image below – Tina’s slot starts at 44 mins in. Thanks you to Notts TV for including us and to Tina for the star turn.

As well as our main brochure, some groups of artists taking part in open studios are producing their own local flyers. Here is the first – the ‘Hidden Valleys Art Trail’ with 15 artists at 8 venues in the villages of Brinsley, Underwood & Selston in the western part of the county. You can download their local flyer by clicking on the images below, and take a look at the artists details on their webpage.
The Open Studios Notts 2018 brochure is now printed and is being distributed – look out for it in Nottinghamshire libraries and other outlets around the county, the city and beyond. You can also view it and download the pdf – just click on the image below.
There are details of events involving over 250 artists, many opening their studios for you to visit, some guesting with other artists, some in small group events and some in larger festivals – all are there for you to meet, view their work and learn about their practices.
There is also information about our linked exhibitions at Retford, Arnold and Beeston libraries running from 27 April to 5 June, showing photographs of a selection of artists working in their studios around Nottinghamshire and Nottingham. The exhibitions are courtesy of Inspire: Culture|Learning|Libraries and the photographs are taken by Notts photographer Neil Pledger.
Artists can now register for Open Studios Notts 2018. All is explained on the Call for Artists page. To guarantee inclusion in the printed brochure, the deadline for completing the registration and paying the fee is 8 Jan 2018.
