Born in Cardiff and originally training in fine art sculpture, Susan Isaac worked as a landscape archaeologist in Shropshire and Lancashire before returning full time to painting and sculpture, based at her adoptive home in Nottinghamshire.

A common thread in Susan’s work is an “endeavour to capture the spirit of things or places I have known, to seek to illuminate aspects of the world that have captured my imagination – to evoke feeling”.

Here Susan talks about her work to Evie Hoggard.

SUSAN ISAAC’S STUDIO

Susan works full time from her studio (a converted farm cartshed) in Upton near Southwell.

SUSAN ISAAC’S WORKmore can be seen on Susan’s website.

Paintings: Susan paints mostly in oils in a loose figurative style which occasionally dissolves into the abstract elements of her compositions, combining strong drawing skills with bold use of colour and application of texture. Her subjects are mainly towns and seascapes. She loves the insistent repetitive textures of the built environment contrasting with the gentle rhythms of nature. Her coastal depictions and harbour scenes are a transposition of childhood memory onto current day experiences.

Sketches:

“Completed in this strange period of physical isolation from the wider world and from people in my community, these very recent works are of a very personal nature – glimpses into my home and garden, observing my daughters, the ever present family dog …”

Ceramic Sculpture: Many of Susan’s ceramic sculptures are a fusion of human and landscape forms. Hand-built stoneware geomorphic heads, referencing the mining landscapes of her birthplace, are enhanced using a variety of glazes and stains and are often wood fired to produce exciting and contrasting surfaces.
