I graduated with a degree in photography from Nottingham Trent in 2000 and have since been based in Nottingham although worked on projects all over the country. During my study of photography I spent a very formative year in Europe with half a year in Leipzig, Germany and half a year in Prague. My approach to photography is experimental, influenced by painting, travel and the shared human experience of landscapes. I have exhibited my work widely and have completed numerous commissions for galleries, hospitals, offices, hotels and private homes.
DOMINIC POTE’S STUDIO
Since my work is made on location and mostly in the landscape, my studio is the place where I come back and edit my images and also store my prints and framed works. It is has good light and a great view over the city so it is a good place to reflect upon projects and to plan new work.
DOMINIC POTE’S WORK
I want to capture landscapes as an experience, to share the feeling of ‘being there’. To do this I take long exposures as I walk. Time is captured not as a momentary fragment, but as an impression which reveals the aura, the essence of that place. I like to work with the camera much as a painter does with paint and canvas, for the film or the sensor to be the place where the image is formed without much intervention afterwards.
