Jess Kemp

I’m guessing that most will now have heard this – and am sorry if this is bringing the sad news that our OSNotts chair, colleague and friend, Jess Kemp passed away last week.

I continue to find that difficult to say or to believe – Jess was hugely supportive of the open studios – I know she believed in it as a way of engaging people with the arts. She generously gave time and thought to supporting it right from her first involvement through the Gedling artists in 2013. She also gave practical help with the hidden stuff, quietly doing a range of necessary admin – things like contributing to artists workshops, arranging meetings, taking minutes and then, from the start of 2017, acting as chair of our organising group. She was also very encouraging to me personally in my own work on the project.

Her artwork and her outlook were joyous as I think these photos show, the latter taken by Neil Pledger in her Sneinton Market Avenue studio in 2018 as part of Inspire’s exhibition about us that year.

Jess was very well known to many through her work, family and community-led life. She was lovely – and I miss her.

Virtual Patchings Festival: 9-12 July

PLEASE NOTE – Although the physical open studio events described here have been cancelled, you can continue to discover and support Nottinghamshire artists & makers by exploring the OSNotts website.

This is the final OSNotts 2020 event that was due to be promoted by us – the ‘Patchings Festival‘ near Calverton in central Notts, reinvented this year as a virtual event.

Patchings Festival in 2020 would have been its 27th year, attracting artists & makers from around the country, creating a showcase of the finest in art, craft & photography.

Although the physical 2020 Patchings Festival cannot take place, the organisers have set up the Virtual Patchings Festival for the same dates of Thursday 9 July (live from 9am) to Sunday 12 July, with all the major artists and exhibitors taking part.

You will be able to ‘walk’ around the Marquees as if inside the festival arena. Within each Marquee you will be greeted by guest and celebrity artists & makers, in some cases being invited into their studios to say hello and receive artists tips. The Art Materials Marquee will have individual companies introducing a range of workshops and demonstrations plus art materials offers (incl Painters Online, Search Press, Daler Rowney, Derwent & UK Coloured Pencil Society).

Spend time with individual artists & makers.
Video workshops & demonstrations from celebrity & guest artists.
Live broadcasts & presentations/interactions with artists.
Art Material & show offers.

Finally – next year’s Festival is being planned for 8-11 July 2021.
