Although passionate about ceramics for decades I pursued a career in graphic design, somehow ending up as a Building Society manager! In 2002 I started a ceramics evening class which culminated in me studying at Loughborough University where, in 2013, I was awarded an MA in Studio Ceramics.

In 2007 I joined Rufford Wood Firing Society and went on to Chair the group, initiating its move to its current home at Thoresby. Wood-firing is central to my practice in terms of the aesthetic that it imparts as well as its relatively low environmental impact compared with other methods of firing.

CARL GRAY – STUDIO

I am a 21st Century nomad! Much of my work is made in an outbuilding adjoining my home in Bassingham. I teach ceramics at Lincoln and Newark Colleges where I make work outside of teaching hours. I fire at Hill Holt Wood, Norton Disney, where I have my kiln site.

CARL GRAY – WORK

The functional wheel thrown things that I make are simple yet highly considered. The sometimes altered work is precisely made but with spontaneous making marks. I use my own blend of clays which responds well to wood-firing. Complex surfaces develop from firing with wood, flame and ash painting the work.
