I have been painting for 20 years after a career in graphic design. I work mainly in watercolours, also using acrylics, pastels and mixed media to create paintings.

Recently I have dived into the textile world and produce pictures from fibre to create felt paintings. I also discovered eco printing on paper and fabric and love experimenting with different techniques and materials. These practices all echo my love for nature and my garden.

JULIE FOWKES’ STUDIO

I have a studio in my beautiful cottage garden, separate from the house. It is a light and small studio, where I paint, plan lessons and love to create. Rose Cottage is where I hold workshops and private lessons in watercolour and felt making.

Julie is 1 of 12 artists featured in an exhibition of photographs (by Neil Pledger) showing behind-the-scenes glimpses into the working worlds of a sample of Nottinghamshire artists and makers. Curated by Inspire: Culture Learning &  Libraries to accompany the Open Studios Notts events, the exhibition has been made available online from 24 April to 4 June, 2020.

JULIE FOWKES’ WORK

My watercolours are loose, vibrant and often etherial. The felt art and eco prints echo this style and I like to think of my work as semi abstracted impressions of our landscape, plants and animals.
