Following a Knitwear Design degree here in Nottingham, Sophie pursued a career as a designer within the knitwear manufacturing industry before starting a family. Then a mosaic workshop 16 years ago became a turning point. At first a hobby, has escalated to become a full time career. Sophie now teaches the subject regularly as well as undertaking commissions, and selling jewellery, prints and more in her Etsy shop. A year ago she took studio premises which she says has been pure joy!

SOPHIE ROBINS – STUDIO

Sophie’s studio is a lovely bright, spacious workshop in Sherwood. She can comfortably teach 10 students and also has the space to work on large commissions. Surrounded by other creative businesses this is inspirational environment. There is a car park and a goods lift on site. Her studio is available for hire.

SOPHIE ROBINS – WORK

“I love upcycling beautiful and often discarded crockery, rediscovering patterns from past decades, sparking memories and combining them with the vibrancy of coloured glass.” Sophie recently has returned to her textile roots to inspire her mosaic work: patchwork, quilting and embroidery. Other inspiration includes mid-century pots and folk art.

ACTIVITIES

In 2018 The National Justice Museum asked me to create a mosaic depicting prisoners engaged in gardening using imagery from their archives. I made the mosaic on pieces of mesh and then joined them all together before grouting it. Here is a speeded up video of me in that process.
