After studying fashion and embroidery, working in the fashion industry and teaching in further education, Janet undertook an MA in the 1990s, altering the direction of her practice.

While never far from the textiles and cloth that she has used all her life, Janet now uses print and stitch, frequently combining this with paper, paint and collage.

Her work is influenced by natural and man-made marks on the land, and more recently by what is under the surface. Regardless of the starting points, the outcomes result in an abstract composition.

JANET GILBERT – STUDIO

My studio is a large upstairs room at the back of my house that, because of a slope, opens out onto the garden! I have two large, high tables in the centre, useful for printing, drawing and everything else. There is a small dyeing room attached.

Open Studio: 5-6 June, 10-4.

  • No wheelchair access. There are outside steps up to the studio, free parking is available on Main Street.
  • Sorry no refreshments this year, but four lovely pubs and a cafe are open in the village.

JANET GILBERT – WORK

I use sketchbooks to explore and develop my ideas, working in wet and dry media and collage. Textile work resolves these ideas starting with various forms of print, building the work layer on layer. Stitch is also introduced, though sometimes I may print over that too.

If you are interested in this work, please contact the artist directly through the links above.
