In my work I try to look beneath the surface, to explore the surrealism that lies behind apparent normality, using colour, tone and textural devices to invite reading of the images on different levels. Influences include the photographer Duane Michals, the film maker David Lynch, and Russian formalist theories. Russian formalism talks about ‘defamiliarisation’, in other words presenting the everyday from an unusual perspective, thus enhancing perception. Both Michals and Lynch have that intriguing quality about their work, at the same time inviting and yet resisting interpretation, something that forces another look… something that inspires me in my work.
